Audre Lorde on Defining Yourself

Welcome to Make Daily! This email contains an idea, reflection, and a simple action you can take to improve your life today.

Idea 💡

"If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive."

— Audre Lorde

Reflection 🤔

If you don't define what your life is about, the world will define your life for you. (Share)

If you don't define what your life is about, the world will define your life for you.

The good news is that the primary domains of being human are the ones we can take action on. Our health, our relationships, our work, or even our perspective of the world can all be molded and shaped into what we want them to be.

The danger is to live on "auto-pilot" and let your life happen to you, instead of intentionally making your mark on life.

Action ✅

Where have you let others define you?

Take one action that provides evidence of your new definition today.

Creator Fact 👤

Audre Lorde was a highly regarded American poet who took on issues like race, sex, and class. Lorde loved books, so it makes sense that she started her career as a librarian.

She earned a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University, and eventually became the head librarian at Manhattan’s Town School.

“I became a librarian because I really believed I would gain tools for ordering and analyzing information. I couldn’t know everything in the world, but I thought I would gain tools for learning it.”
