Hi makers,

I almost didn’t write this. The Russia/Ukraine conflict has me feeling a lot of things: sadness, confusion, and a realization of how little I know about what is happening around the world.

The more information I've gathered, the more it all just hurts.

I decided to publish with the hope of bringing a spark of joy (or even just momentary distraction) to a tough couple of days.

Here are some cool things I found this week:

☁️ Thinking: The Merry-Go-Round of Human Societies

There is a famous quote I think about often:

“Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.” - G. Michael Hopf

There are plenty of issues up for debate in this idea, but I think the general arc of history tends to follow this path.

Where do you think we are in the cycle?

📕 Reading: Ogilvy on Advertising

I’ve been interested in the art of copywriting lately. So naturally, I had to start reading the classics on the topic. None come more highly regarded than Ogilvy on Advertising, and it definitely is living up to the hype.

This book is a must read to go inside one of the most innovative agencies that ever existed. Not to mention, their ad’s are fun to study.

Here’s one for Volkswagen that sells the benefits of a Bug:

“When I write an advertisement, I don’t want you to tell me that you find it ‘creative’.

I want you to find it so interesting that you buy the product”

– David Ogilvy

🎵 Listening: Margaret Atwood — A Living Legend on Creative Process

Tim Ferriss’ interview with Margaret Atwood is a fun listen for any and all creators out there.

Atwood is the author of The Handmaids Tale and countless other works. I haven’t read her stuff before, so the personality and joy she brings to this interview is the magic I didn't know I needed.

I couldn’t say I had many “takeaways” from listening. Instead, I left feeling inspired to see the world differently, and sometimes that is all you really want from a podcast.

📹 Watching: The Local Project

I’ve been thinking a lot about maintaining a peaceful environment lately. For me, having a space that is beautiful, functional, and calm is a must for maintaining my sanity in the stresses of life.

So it’s natural that when I am procrastinating or have a spare minute, I’ve been enjoying The Local Project for inspiration.

The premise of the channel is simple: beautiful videos about beautiful homes in beautiful Australia and New Zealand.

Here’s one of my favorites.

⚡️ Bonus: PSA to all creators

A little reminder that it’s okay to say no. Especially to yourself. 🙂

That’s all I have to share this week! Take some time to disconnect and make something cool this weekend.

See you on Monday with a new podcast.
