René Girard on Scapegoats

Welcome to Make Daily! This email contains an idea, reflection, and a simple action you can take to improve your life today.

Idea 💡

"A scapegoat remains effective as long as we believe in its guilt."

— René Girard

Reflection 🤔

Scapegoating produces two harmful responses to a situation:
1. Outsourcing your agency to someone else
2. Feeling justified in not taking action

The worst way to move forward in life is by harboring blame on others. Even when you've been wronged, scapegoating produces two harmful responses to a situation:

  1. Outsourcing your agency to someone else
  2. Feeling justified in not taking action

Scapegoating has a negative domino effect until you recognize it and decide to move on.

Action ✅

Who is your scapegoat?

Let them go and reclaim what is yours.

Creator Fact 👤

René Girard was a French polymath and philosopher of social sciences. He's best known for an idea called Mimetic Theory where he argues that our desires come from seeing what others have instead of wanting something ourselves.

"Man is the creature who does not know what to desire, and he turns to others in order to make up his mind. We desire what others desire because we imitate their desires."

Essentially, we want what we want because others wanted it first.
